The Cross Plains Police Department presently consists of the Chief of Police - email - tjanssen@crossplainspolicewi.com and four other full time sworn police officers as well as a civilian administrative assistant. In addition, several officers are employed on a part-time basis.

The Police Department is not staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In the event there is no Cross Plains Police Department officer on duty, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office handles emergency calls in the Village.

Important Points:

  • WHEN IN DOUBT - CALL. If you don’t want to call 911, then use the non-emergency line. Using the non-emergency line may take longer for your call to be answered, however. Both lines will be answered by either a Dane County Communication Center dispatcher or a member of the Cross Plains Police Department.
  • Road Weight Limits:
    No person may operate any heavy traffic on any part of any street or highway that is not designated a heavy traffic route. Designated heavy traffic routes are Main St., Church St., Thinnes St. between Church St. and Springfield Road,  Market St. south of Highway 14, Center St. between Highway 14 and Park St., and Bourbon Road. From highway KP to 300 feet east of Ludden Drive.
  • Skateboard Park:
    The Village of Cross Plains will have a skateboard park located at Baer Park.  Skateboards and in-line skates are permitted. No bicycles are permitted inside the fenced in park.
  • Firearm use:
    No person except a sheriff deputy, police officer or other law enforcement officer may fire or discharge any firearm in the Village.
  • Bicycles:
    All bicycles kept in the Village shall be registered at the Police Dept. or Village Office. Once a bicycle is registered, it does not have to be registered again until the bicycle is sold, or transferred to new owner. There is no fee required.
  • Juvenile Curfew:
    No person under the age of 15 years may be upon any street, alley, park or other unsupervised public places in the Village between the hours of 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM on Friday and Saturday. No person who is age 15, 16 or 17 may be upon any street, alley, park or other unsupervised public places in the Village between the hours of 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM Sunday through Thursday and 11:59 PM and 5:00 AM on Friday and Saturday, unless that child is running errands for parents or traveling directly to and from a place of business or school function.
  • Madison Area Crime Stoppers:
    A 24 hour tip line is available for anyone wishing to report criminal activity or information relating to a crime. Tipsters may be eligible to receive a cash reward if the information leads to an arrest for recovery of illegal items. 608-266-6014.
  • Parking:
    No vehicle shall be left parked in any street within the Village for more than 48 hours.
    • In Winter: After the accumulation of 2 inches or more of snow, no person may park, or leave parked any vehicle on any street or highway until after the street or highway has been completely plowed, from curb to curb.
  • Inoperable/Abandoned Vehicles:
    No disassembled, inoperable, unlicensed or junked vehicle may be stored or remain open to view upon any street in the Village for a period in excess of five days without permit. Permits may be obtained from the Village Clerk.
  • Dogs and Cats:
    All dogs and cats in the Village must be licensed and have rabies vaccination. Licenses may purchased at the Village Office. No one may own, harbor or keep any dog or cat which: Is known to be infected with rabies, known to be of vicious disposition, has been found to be killing or wounding any animal, habitually disturbs the peace, chases cars, attacks or destroys the property of another. Owners are responsible for disposing of feces left by their animal.
  • Residence Checks:
    Residents leaving the Village are encouraged to come to the Police Department and complete a residence check sheet. Information on this form will assist us in the event of a problem while the resident is out of town.
  • School Programs:
     There is a school liaison officer who is available to the schools. This officer is able to provide information and assistance with issue relating to our youth.
  • Community Services:
    The Community Services Officer is available to provide information and assistance on crime prevention, neighborhood watch programs, personal safety and other areas affecting the community.
  • Municipal Court:
    All Village ordinance violations are handled through the Municipal Court. Municipal Court is held at the Municipal Building. Questions about Municipal Court or about a municipal citation can be referred to the Court Clerk at 608-798-4101 or 608-798-4100.
